What is 17-4 PH condition A?
Stainless Steel 17-4 PH round bars made from a precipitation-hardening martensitic alloy of chromium and nickel have high strength and corrosion resistance. It is because of the 17-4 PH condition A or solution annealed condition. However, it is not ideal for cryogenic services or applications that exceed temperatures of 572 F or 300 C.
The density of 17-4 PH bars in the annealed or solution-treated condition is 0.280 lb/in^3. The thickness will change upon heating above the stipulated 900 F or 482 C. To have close tolerances during usage it is essential to consider the predictable density changes.

What type of steel is 17 4 PH round bar?
17-4 PH bar material is a grade 630 martensitic stainless steel alloy with high strength, hardness and corrosion resistance. The UNS S 17400 is a chromium-nickel-copper precipitation hardening steel ally with niobium. Known as 17-4 because of its 17% chromium and 4% nickel, it also has 3 to 5% copper. SS17-4PH Material in the solution annealed condition below 900 F or 482 C has tensile and yield strength and excellent elongation percentage. But it is not suitable for applications involving temperatures above 300 C or 572 F or for cryogenic services.

Does 17-4 PH stainless steel round bar harden?
Yes, hardening a 17-4 PH Stainless Steel round bar is possible with a single hardening heat treatment- low-temperature precipitation. It is because of 17-4 or SS UNS S17400 Hex Bar, a precipitation-hardening martensitic SS alloy with chromium and nickel. It also has additions of manganese, cobalt, and niobium to have high strength, corrosion resistance, and hardness up to 572 F or 300 C. AMS 5643 Steel 17-4 PH Bright Bar can withstand extreme corrosive attacks compared to other standard hardened stainless steel bars. It is because of its high yield strength of up to 1100 – 1300 Mpa or 160 to 190 ksi.

What is the density of 17-4 stainless steel bars?
17-4 PH Stainless Steel Bar has a density of 0.280 lb/in^3 el in the solution-treated condition A. For the other conditions, there is a change in the density values that include density changed to 0.282 lb/in^3. for H900, 0.283 lb/in^3.for H 1075 and 0.284 lb/in^3. for H 1150.
The above changes in density indicate that the 17-4 Ph alloy undergoes volume contraction on hardening. But the volume contraction is predictable, and the buyer should take it into account to hold close tolerances.
