What is AISI 1117 flat bar?

Steel Grade 1117, either Hot Rolled or Cold Formed, is the steel type that has low carbon and high manganese content. The chemical composition of C1117 comprises 0.14-0.2% of Carbon, 1-1.3% of Manganese, 0- 0.04% of Phosphorus, and 0.08-0.13% of Sulfur. The Steel grade is good for bending and deforming without cracking. It has a tough ductile core with deep and uniform case hardening.

AISI 1117 Flat Bar is one of the many products of the Steel Grade 1117. It is mainly used mainly for manufacturing equipment in automatic screw machines such as gears, pinions, worms, king pins, ratchets, medium-duty shafts, studs, camshafts, universal joints, etc. Materials like 1117 Steel Flat Rod and 1117 Carbon Steel Sheared & Edged Flat Bar also make up for good materials for the manufacturing of such equipment. The presence of high manganese ensures the hardness of the steel.

What is AISI 1117 flats used for?

Low Carbon Steel flat bar is the type of steel that is cost-effective and highly suited for a huge range of applications. It offers the strength, versatility, and formability of steel and the reduced carbon content of Steel flats makes it easier to work with.

AISI 1117 flats, due to the presence of high levels of manganese, are used in the mining industry and rail industry for switches, crossings, joints, studs, and many more as such. Similarly, AISI 1117 Carbon Steel flats are used in the manufacture of steering components. AISI C1117 is also used in automatic screw machines that provide a smooth finish requiring considerable machining and close tolerances.

How do you harden AISI 1117 carbon steel flats?

Steel Grade 1117 responds to any of the standard carburizing methods and subsequent heat treatments and hence can be hardened with the help of those. The manganese content in carbon steels is also often increased for the purpose of increasing the depth of hardening in them.

In order to get a hard case and tough core in steel such as AISI 1117 Steel Bright Flat Bar, it is suggested to carburize the steel at 1650-1700 0°F for approximately 8 hours. This is followed by cooling it in a box and reheating it at 1400-1450°F. After quenching water, drawing it at 300-350°F can lead to hardening it. The same methods can be applied to AISI 1117 Carbon Steel flats too.

Can you weld SAE 1117 flat bar?

1117 Steel Grade ranks on a machinability rating of 91% of B1112. Generally, 1117 is not available for easy welding due to its high sulfur content and the addition of lead 1117.

However, there are ways that allow us to find some way to perform the welding process on such steel. SAE 1117 Flat Bar may use gas or arc welding providing joints are preheated. A low alloy filler helps in the development of equivalent strength in a weld while stress relieving after welding is also recommended.

What kind of steel is C1117 steel rolled flat bars?

The Steel Grade C1117 is a low-carbon, high-manganese steel with high mechanical properties and high machinability. Hence, the C1117 Steel Rolled Flat Bar is Mild Steel with high manganese content.

Carbon Steel UNS G11170 Flat Bars also come under the same category of steel and so does the UNS G11170 Rolling Flat Bar. They are used for manufacturing numerous industrial parts requiring considerable machining and close tolerances. These Steel have an ultimate tensile strength of 475 MPa and yield strength of 400 MPa.
