Carbon steel valves

What are carbon steel valves?

Carbon steel is an alloy of carbon that has around 0.05 to 2.1% carbon by weight in its chemical composition. The carbon steel valves are quite strong and durable, but they cannot resist rust when exposed to moisture as good as the stainless steel.

The carbon steel valve material is used in various industrial processes and utility applications. The carbon steel floating ball valve is used in industries like chemical, petrochemical, gas, etc.

There are different types of cs valves like:

  • The carbon steel plug valve is used for starting or stopping a fluid.
  • The carbon steel check valve helps to prevent the backward flow of fluids. There is also carbon steel swing check valve which is mostly used in sewage system, wastewater treatment, etc.
  • The carbon steel foot valve is installed in a pump or bottom of the pipeline for preventing damage to the system during dry runs. They also help to stop energy wastage.
  • The carbon steel needle valve is used for regulating purposes. They enable the engineers to finely control and regulate the flow of water and pressure.
  • The carbon steel diaphragm valve helps to control liquid and gas flow and offers bubble-tight services.

Difference between carbon steel ball valve and gate valve

Both the ball and gate valves are flow control devices that help to control the flow of liquid or gas.

The difference lies in their operation procedure. The carbon steel ball valve has a ball that rotates with the bore present in it at 90 degrees to open or close the valve. The carbon steel gate valve comes with a solid disk that moves up and down for opening/closing the valve.

Difference between Linear, Rotary & Quarter Motion CS Valve

The linear cs valve comes with a sliding stem design which pushes a closure element to an open or closed position.

In the rotary cs valve, rotation of passages takes place in a transverse plug which regulates the liquid or gas flow through the pipe attached.

For quarter motion cs valve, they are operated by giving the stem of the valve a 90-degree turn clockwise or anticlockwise.

Thus, the primary difference between the three types of valves lies in their operating procedure.

How to recognize a defective carbon steel flanged ball valve?

To recognize a defective carbon steel flanged ball valve, its soft seat should be checked. It can get damaged due to high pressure drop across the ball, causing it to get locked.

What is PSI in a carbon steel globe valve and how is it calculated?

The psi measures the pressure of gas, liquid, etc., pounds per square inch of the inside of the Carbon steel Globe Valve.

How to choose the right carbon steel butterfly valve?

In order to choose the right carbon steel butterfly valve, it is essential to understand its pros and cons.

The butterfly valve can be used in applications that require:

  • Quarter turn and open port.
  • Use in a wide range of chemical or corrosive media.
  • It has low pressure drop and high pressure recovery.
  • It is compact, lightweight, and available in larger sizes.

The cons of the valve are:

  • It is difficult to clean
  • Cannot deal with slurries
  • The throttling is limited to a low differential pressure
  • There is a high potential for cavitation and choke
  • It has unguided disc movements which gets affected by the flow turbulence.
