Threaded Fittings

What are Threaded Fittings?

A threaded fitting is one of the oldest methods utilized to join different piping equipment. Threaded fittings are used for smaller diameter pipes, generally with nominal diameters of NPS 2 or more. These fittings are designed in cast, forged, or carbon steel. The threaded fitting dimensions are covered by the ASME B1.20.1 standard.

Threaded fittings are commonly used in non-critical low pressure and temperature conditions. The versatile grade has 3 Threaded fittings pressure rating, namely class 2000, 3000, and 6000.

Advantages & disadvantages of Threaded Pipe Fittings

Threaded pipe fittings are versatile fittings that can allow for an easy connection point. These fittings don’t require specialized skills and are very economical. Threaded pipe fittings can be easily detached for maintenance or repair. The fittings are very economical than other fitting types.

The threaded pipe fittings are not suited for higher temperature conditions. These fittings are prone to corrosion and can crack under high pressure. It may be subjected to fatigue damage for cyclic services and has lower strength than its welded counterparts.

How is NPT thread length calculated in Threaded Fitting?

The taper rate for Npt fitting threads is 1 inch of diameter for 16 inches of length. This is measured by the change of diameter in the pipe over the distance of the thread in the NPT connection.

What is thread per inch in screw thread of a Threaded Fittings?

It can be defined as the number of complete threads occurring in one inch of a threaded length.

BSP Fittings vs NPT Fitting

BSP and NPT fittings are two standards of threads on threaded fittings. BSP fittings are common in the UK, Europe, Asia, New Zealand, and various other countries. NPT Fitting is relevant in the US and Canada. Npt pipe fittings are designed with pointed peaks and valleys, while BSP fittings are rounded. BSP has a 55 degree angle, while Npt threaded pipe fittings have threads at a 60 degrees angle.

What are the three basic types of threads in Forged Threaded Fittings?

The forged threaded fittings are produced via the forging process and have excellent strength. The basic threads that are designed to make forged threaded pipe fittings are UN/UNF, NPT/NPTF, and BSPP/BSPT.

How are threaded pipe fittings manufactured? Processing methods start from forging to Thread forming and rolling

The process for manufacturing NPT threaded fittings or any other begins with the forging process. Here the metal is heated at high temperatures till it is formed in definite sizes.

The threaded process of the NPS threaded fittings can be done in subtractive, deformative, and additive methods. The subtractive method is a cutting process. It uses tapping, die threading, single point cutting chasing, milling, and grinding methods to shape the material. The deformation process generates threads by working the metal to form its shape. Generally, the metal is rolled and cast during the phase. Finally, the additive process uses depositing material to produce the threads. Some additive process includes stereolithographic, fused filament fabrication, and selective laser sintering methods.

The final stage is the thread rolling phase, which involves deforming the metal using dies. The process forms external threads on the surface of the metal stock. Internal threads can be formed using the same method.

Which testing required to check shape and geometric dimensions of a Threaded Fitting to meet the requirements of the drawing?

Generally, a visual test can be used to check the dimensions of the threaded fittings. However, for a more sound solution, an ultrasonic test can be performed.

How to identify British and metric threaded fittings?

British and metric threaded fittings are the most popular threaded fittings. They come in parallel and tapered versions. British threads come in imperial or inch sizes, while metric threads are displayed in millimeters. The British threads are measured by threads over an inch. Imperial threads are measured by the actual distance between thread crests and millimeters.

Din Screwed Fitting Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages

  • On-site threaded junction creation is simple using pipe and fittings.
  • When installed in locations with flammable gases and liquids, they reduce the risk of a fire.

Disadvantages

  • Threaded joints have a greater likelihood of leaking.
  • Seal welding might be necessary in riskier circumstances.
  • Because manufacturing the screw thread thins the wall of the pipe, threaded connections lose some of their strength.

Difference between Threaded Vs Socket Weld Fittings

Threaded fittings are screwed into piping or piping components while Socket welded fittings are joined by fillet welding. Threaded Fittings are Less reliable as compared to Socket Welded Fittings. Threaded Fittings are more prone to leakage.

Recommendations For Threaded Connections

  • Threaded joints should be avoided in corrosive and erosive environments, as well as in situations where cyclic loading is possible.
  • The layout of piping using threaded joints should minimise stress on joints, with special consideration given to stresses caused by thermal expansion and valve operation.
  • Under severe cyclic conditions, threaded specialty components that are not subject to external moment loading, such as thermometer wells, may be used.
