Threaded Union

The unions can be produced in different grades. An ss union fitting is designed with superior chemical content. This gives the fittings enhanced tolerance to corrosive and reducing media. The brass threaded union has solid strength and good anti-microfouling properties. In some cases, brass performs better than stainless steel unions. The copper threaded union is ductile but weaker compared to the other two grades.

What is standard threading in stainless steel union fittings?

Threading of stainless steel union is one of the oldest methods of joining them in the system. The process of threading in the robust stainless steel union fittings starts by forging the material at high temperatures. The forged material is very strong and allows the material to be formed in different shapes.

The forged steel union is subjected to forming and rolling procedures. During this stage, the fitting is subject to various tests and processes. The stainless steel threaded union is generally designed in UN/UNF, NPT/NPTF, BSPP, BSPT, metric parallel, and metric tapered. Each of the stainless steel pipe union types has its own characteristics and features.

Are SAE and NPT the same in the carbon steel union?

SAE and NPT are two standards of carbon steel union. Both these standards differ from each other on some specifications. An NPT thread is self-sealing and has a 60 degrees angle. SAE threaded union fitting is non-self-sealing and requires O ring gaskets to seal them. They have a 45 degree angle.

How much pressure can stainless steel union hold?

The class and threaded union dimensions play a key role in determining the pressure the union can hold. The stainless steel union is designed to work in pressure classes of 6000, 9000, and class 3000 threaded union. Generally, the union is rated to hold a maximum pressure of 1378 bar.

What is a stainless steel dielectric union?

A stainless dielectric union is a special fitting used in a piping to isolate the connection of a range of dissimilar metals. So when joining a copper pipeline to stainless steel a copper to stainless steel dielectric union is set up between both of them. This allows the setup to hold the two metal devices to be together via the dielectric union stainless steel to copper. Here an elastomeric rubber gasket is used to seal the connection to prevent water mix-up. The stainless steel to copper dielectric union also uses a plastic composite metal to isolate the material. In many cases, when both the material come in contact, they tend to corrode. The same process can be used between brass and stainless steel using the stainless steel to brass dielectric union.

What is a threaded union?

A threaded union is a fitting that unites two pieces of equipment. These fittings can be attached and later detached without causing any deformation. A steel union fitting allows for easy installation, and any connection that requires a seal is done with a union fitting. The screwed union is widely used due to their economical cost and versatility. This makes it very demanding in the market. The 1 inch threaded union helps in metering and regulating devices in the plumbing industry. These unions can be coated with protective layers, as seen in the galvanized pipe union to give them better tolerances.

How Does A Threaded Union Work?

Because a union detaches, you can separate it and affix each half to the end of one of the pipes being joined separately. Unions, like couplings, can have slip joints for glueing or soldering or threaded inlets. After assembling the union’s two halves, connect the pipes by bringing the union together and screwing the nut on one side to the threads on the other. When fully tightened, this central connection is leakproof even without the use of plumbing tape or thread compound.

Threaded Coupling Vs Union

Copper Threaded Coupling

  • The primary distinction between a coupling and a union is that a coupling is used to connect pipe to pipe or pipe to a swedge. A union is used to join and disassemble a piping system component (such as a steam trap or control valve) for maintenance or replacement.
  • The union is more expensive than the coupling. When simply joining pipes, the cheapest item should be used. When you need to disassemble the piping to remove an item, you must use the more expensive union.
  • Couplings are used to connect pipe in pipe racks. To remove items for repair, use unions at the steam trap or control valve manifolds.
