What is a hex head screw?

Hexagon head cap screws are threaded fasteners with six-sided heads. They are also known as hex bolts or hex head cap screws. They are put in place with a socket or a wrench. Hex head cap screws offer a greater surface-bearing area than other fasteners, resulting in better gripping. There is usually an exterior hexagon head on hex heads.

What is a hex type screw?

Hex bolts, also known as hex head screws, are substantial bolts with a hex (hexagonal) head that are used to fasten metal or wood. As opposed to carriage bolts, these tend to spin as you tighten them, thus you must use a wrench or socket to hold the bolt head while using another wrench to tighten (or loosen) the nut. Hex bolts can be made of plain steel for interior applications, stainless steel, or galvanized steel for outdoor use, and they all feature small threads and a smooth shank.

How do you install hexagon head screw?

Here’s how using a normal wrench to hex works:

  • Select the wrench that matches the size of your screw.
  • Around the screw, position the wrench.
  • To tighten or loosen, turn in either direction.
  • If your wrench doesn’t have ratchet action, take it off the screw and reposition it to revolve.
  • Till the screw is fastened or loosened, repeat the procedure.

An adjustable wrench can be used as shown below.

  • Wrap the screw with the wrench loosely in place.
  • The wrench should be adjusted so that it fits the head.
  • Turn in the same direction as a normal wrench to tighten.
  • Once the screw is in or out, remove the wrench and restart the turning process.

How do you measure socket head screw size?

The length is calculated from the thread tip to the point where the head rests flat against the surface. Measurements made for hex head screws from the bottom of the head to the end of the threads. The compressive stress in the threaded parts, which are weak spots under varying load circumstances, is the fundamental drawback of screwed joints.
