Hydraulic fittings

What are hydraulic fittings?

Hydraulic applications require fittings that allow fluids to divert, mix, etc., without creating any leakage. Hydraulic fittings connect the hose to crucial components in the installation, like pipes, cylinders, etc. You can find such fittings in different fluid applications such as plumbing, heavy equipment, oil and gas, and assembly lines.

When selecting suitable hydraulic pipe fittings for your application, you should check that it is compatible with the fluid. Different industries use diverse hydraulic fluids to power up the system machinery. Petroleum-based liquids, water, and synthetic media are the most common.

Difference between SAE and BSP hydraulic fittings

Society of Automotive Engineers fittings or SAE uses male and female halves with a 45° flare seat. SAE hydraulic fittings work well in low pressure and get regularly used in refrigeration and automotive piping. Copper tubes often get connected with SAE fittings. It is one of the standard thread types used in the USA.

On the other hand, British Standard Pipe or BSP hydraulic fittings use metal-to-metal or O-rings for sealing. These fittings could be BSPP (parallel) or BSPT (tapered), and both threads have the same angle of 55°. For example, BSPT male threads seal against threads of fixed BSPT female threads. They are also called Whitworth threads and are the preferred system in Europe.

How do single ferrule hydraulic fittings work?

Some applications use single-ferrule systems for quick installation and lower costs. A hydraulic ferrule fitting consists of a ring, the main body, and a nut. When the nut gets tightened, the two edges of the ferrule bite into the tube. It generates a secure seal that can resist high temperatures and pressures.

Typically, hydraulic tube fittings get made with stainless steel or brass to enhance corrosion resistance and prevent abrasion with time. More critical systems have moved on to double-ferrule fittings. But the classic, single-ferrule design, like 400 bar hydraulic fittings, remains popular in conditions of vibration and pulsation.

What is an EO fitting?

Bite-type fittings get favoured in many pneumatic and hydraulic applications because of their simple assembly and superior performance. Ermeto or EO hydraulic fittings are one of the most common choices, consisting of a body, a ferrule, and a nut. The ferrule has sharp edges that bite into the tube and create a seal. An EO fitting seal can withstand high pressures without inducing leakage.

The design of these fittings ensures that the forces get are evenly distributed through the tube. You can safely use them in conditions of stress, pulsation, etc.

An advanced type of EO fitting is called EO-2. It features elastomeric seals on the joints. It prevent leakage and get employed in fluid management systems.

Difference between hydraulic connectors, hydraulic adapters and hydraulic bulkhead fittings

Hydraulic equipment is generally complex and operates under high pressure. It comprises various hydraulic connectors to connect hoses to critical components, like, tubes, cylinders, etc.

Connecting hoses to a tank with a leak-proof seal is crucial for system integrity. Hydraulic bulkhead fittings get used for this purpose. The fitting gets inserted into the tank, and the nut gets tightened appropriately. In contrast, hydraulic adapters connect two different components in hydraulic systems that may otherwise be mutually incompatible. For example, an adapter can connect the pump to multiple hoses adhering to different standards.

Fittings, adapters, hydraulic caps and plugs are the most common components in high-pressure systems.

BSP hydraulic fittings are available in 400 / 700 bar and totally interchangeable with Swagelok/ Parker/ ERMETO hydraulic fittings

What are high pressure hydraulic fittings?

A high-pressure rating gets applied to industrial settings that operate in a pressure range above 450 bar. High pressure hydraulic fittings can work at 15,000 psi to 30,000 psi without undergoing deformation.

These connections get used with petroleum, water, and other fluids in severe conditions. Typically, 700 bar hydraulic fittings can also tolerate high temperatures.

A hydraulic compression fitting can employ different connections, like couplings and nipples. You will find them in rescue equipment, ultra high-pressure pumps, hoses, porting blocks, and gauges.

Flat face hydraulic fittings feature in high-pressure systems. They use O-rings for sealing and get built from stainless steel or super alloys of zinc and chromium.
