What are Jacketed Gaskets?

High-temperature and high-pressure applications often need rigid shielding to prevent blowout. Hence they use robust jacketed gaskets. These are constructed of a filler material wrapped by a metal outer layer. These often have a two-layer metal construction. In such cases, there is a soft layer against the flat facing and a wrap layer. The latter wraps at both sides to completely encapsulate the filler. There are various manufacturers one may choose per their requirements. The most common are the Flexitallic metal jacketed gaskets used in heat exchangers, autoclaves, valve bonnets, etc.

What is the difference between Metal Jacketed Gasket and envelope gaskets?

A metal jacketed gasket has a filler material encapsulated by a metal outer layer. The construction is extremely robust and can prevent blowouts in high-pressure and high-temperature working conditions. These are best known for their robust construction and ability to prevent blowouts. On the other hand, an envelope gasket or PTFE jacketed gasket has a PTFE coating over a core insert material. This gives the gasket the features of the core material, plus the advantages of the PTFE coating. Envelope gaskets are known for their anti-corrosive properties that make them compatible with mineral and organic chemicals.

  • The gasket is chemically resistant to a wide variety of fluids. You have to make the right material selection depending on the application.
  • Different material choices suit specific temperatures and corrosive mediums.
  • The gasket jacketed are available in custom sizes. There are no size restrictions either, because of the manufacturing method.

Does Jacket Gasket material selection matter?

When it comes to material selection, is certainly an important factor for a jacket gasket. These are used for a variety of purposes, in different environments. And selecting the right material ensures that the gasket is suitable for optimum use in any given conditions. And both the choice of the outer metal layer and the inner core material are important. The latter provides the gasket resilience and ability to handle compression. The best options are CAF and PTFE. Whereas, the outer metal layer helps in resisting temperature, corrosion and other elements. That you may select from materials like Carbon steel, soft iron and certain Stainless steel 300 series metals.

Types Of Single Jacketed Gaskets

A single jacketed gasket has a metal encapsulation over the filler material. The minimum gasket width is 6.4 mm and the standard gasket thickness is 3.2 mm.

Two types of these gaskets are available.

  • Style 120 = In this, only one of the contact surfaces is covered. It is suitable for narrow flange width, both circular and non-circular formats. However, it is not recommended for use with standard flange sizes.
  • Style 124 = This is an overlapped version where filler material is encapsulated in both the inner and outer diameters of both contact surfaces. It is for high-temperature applications involving narrow flange width.
