ASTM A234 WPB elbow
carbon steel grade wpb long radius elbow
CS buttweld pipe fittings
What is an ASTM A234 WPB Elbow?
The ASTM A234 specification covers steel pipe fittings suitable for moderate and high-temperature applications. Adco Forge & Fittings manufactures ASTM A234 WPB Elbows adhering to this standard. The pressure rating for these connections is 150 to 2500 lbs.
The most popular fitting demanded by many sectors is a 90-degree long radius elbow under this specification. It shows reliable performance and matches most industrial environments to realize a change in the fluid flow direction. These fittings have widespread utility in pressure vessels and pipelines.
The ASTM A234 standard includes many grades, of which WPB is the most popular for medium to severe temperature conditions. Here, W stands for “weldable”, and P refers to “pressure.” The B implies “Grade B” in minimum yield strength. These elbows can use wrought carbon steel or alloy steel. The company’s portfolio covers steel fittings of seamless and welded varieties.
Manufacture carbon steel grade wpb long radius elbow and short radius elbows from 1/2″ to 48″ in welded and 1/2″ to 12″ in seamless
What are Carbon Steel Grade WPB Long Radius elbows and Short radius elbows?
Elbows can get manufactured in two main types differing in their length and curvature: long radius and short radius. A Carbon Steel Grade WPB Long Radius Elbow has a radius of curvature 1.5 times the nominal diameter. But a short radius elbow has the same radius as the nominal diameter of the piping.
Carbon Steel WPB grade displays excellent durability, resilience, and cost-effectiveness. Elbows manufactured from this material find applications in pressure vessels, oil and gas pipelines, and chemical processing. Since its inception in 2017, Adco has actively supplied both types of fittings in the standard dimensions: 1/2″ to 48″ for welded and 1/2″ to 12″ for seamless. Custom sizes are also available upon request.

Manufacturing process for Welded & Seamless 45 / 90 Degree elbows
The standard approaches for producing Welded & Seamless 45 / 90 Degree elbows include hot-forming through extrusion, rolling, and forging. The Mandrel method is one of the most commonly used. It involves pushing the heated metal over the die (i.e., the mandrel) to let the pipe assume the required shape and dimensions.
Seamless elbows, as the name suggests, don’t have any seams on the body and usually get produced via punching or a hot push through a steel pipe. Some manufacturers also use extrusion, which involves placing the tube into an external die. Hydraulic presses are employed to force the hot steel through the die.
Adco follows carefully tested manufacturing practices and provides MTC test reports with the deliveries. The specific technique gets selected based on the most befitting method for the size, properties, and usage of the fittings.

Advantages of Carbon Steel Buttweld Pipe Fittings
Industries operating under severe temperature and pressure or abrasive agents prefer Carbon Steel Buttweld Pipe Fittings. These components offer durability, strength, and corrosion resistance. They create a leak-tight seal while permitting a change in the fluid direction or facilitating a pipe size reduction. The failure-proof seal helps improve performance and limit maintenance and repair costs.
Carbon steel is more recyclable than many other material options, which makes it a green choice. Moreover, it is ideal for handling vibration, elevated pressures, and other environmental stressors. Buttweld Pipe Fittings of this material frequently get used in petrochemicals, power generation, and chemical processing plants.

What are astm a234 wpb pipe bend, piggable bend, and mitered pipe bend?
Pipe bends are integral in process pipelines to introduce a necessary change in the direction. An astm a234 wpb pipe bend uses sturdy, corrosion-resistant material suitable for medium to high temperatures. It has a minimum bending radius of 1.5 times that of the pipe; anything lower than that is an elbow. The most common pipe bends range from 1.5 to 4.5 times the radius. They get used for affecting a smooth directional change and being relatively quick to install.
Adco also manufactures Piggable Bends to allow pathways for the pig (pipeline intervention gadget) through the piping. It lets the pig flow smoothly and perform its necessary operations of inspection, cleaning, etc.
You can make a mitered bend by cutting pipe ends angularly and joining them. For example, cutting two pipes at 45 degrees and welding them together will produce a “true” mitered bend of 90 degrees.
