Annealing between 1600°F to 1800°F softens the already work-hardened material. After annealing, the fittings are quenched rapidly. Often Alloy 400 Reducers are stress relieved to remove residual stresses. Since the residual stresses have been eliminated to a large degree, there is an increase in its yield strength.

ASTM B564 UNS N04400 contains nickel and copper, both of which have good resistance to corrosion at an elemental level. As an alloy, their corrosion resistance properties extend to several chemicals including hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acids in a deaerated condition. The elbow has better resistance to reductive environments compared to nickel and greater resistance to oxidation compared to copper.
