A wire which is composed of group of nickel alloys, which comprises 67% nickel content with small amounts of iron, manganese, carbon and silicon is called as Monel wire. Because they have higher nickel content, they provide excellent resistance to corrosion, especially from seawater. A grade of Monel wire, Monel 400 wire can be hardened by cold working, and are able to withstand temperature conditions up to 1050-degree Fahrenheit. It also exhibits good mechanical properties when the temperature is less than zero. Adding to this, they have a melting point ranging between 2370–2460-degree Fahrenheit.

Alloy 400 wire:

This wire is composed by higher nickel, chromium and molybdenum contents. This is one of the reasons why it shows resistance to seawater at a large scale at high temperatures. Salt and caustic solutions are also resisted by using this alloy wire. They also show good weldability characteristics and have high level strength. On the other hand, marine applications widely use this wire mainly because of low corrosion rates in flowing brackish or seawater. They also show resistance to stress corrosion cracking. Adding to this, when de-aerated, they show resistance to hydrochloric acids.

K500 Monel wire:

These wires are nickel-copper based precipitation-hardened wires. They also provide corrosion resistance. The only difference from 400 wire is that it comes with an added advantage of hardness. This is however achieved by adding aluminium and titanium to the alloy mixture. Alloy K500 annealed wire has greater stress corrosion cracking tendency than alloy wire 400. This wire also has yield strength which is 3 times than that of 400 wiring.
