What is reducing flange?

A flange is used in a piping system to make sure that the piping connection is strong and is fitted without the need for welding so that it can be disassembled and reassembled as needed. There are different flanges to support the different requirements. The Reducing flange is a combination of a weld neck flanges and a reducer fitting. The flanges has an outer diameter and an inner diameter on the inlet and the outlet has a reduced inner diameter. The outlet side has a weld neck. So the flange can be fitted to another flanges on the end of the incoming pipe while the outlet can be connected to the outgoing pipe, making the connection an effective reducer.

What is the primary problem with using a reducing flange?

Slip on reducing flanges can cause turbulence in the pipeline because of the volume change through the flanges. The volume change increases velocity in the outgoing line to maintain pressure. If the velocity drops, the pressure increases. Reducing blind flanges can also disturb the piping space because the flanges have abruptly larger diameters than the pipes. The uneven bolt stress and gasket stress can cause the B16.5 reducing flanges to leak at the connection; especially if the pipes transmit fluids with low viscosity or gases at high pressure or at high temperature.

What type of stainless steel should I specify for reducing flanges?

Stainless steel reducing flanges can come in different materials such as 304, 316, alloy steels, high alloy metals, carbon steel, or duplex steel. Each flange has to be decided based on the requirements. If the material meets the requirements, sufficient material has to be selected. Carbon steel reducing flanges is one of the most used because it is cost-efficient and has high abrasion resistance for general applications.

How to design a reducing flange?

These flanges can be made of any material and of different dimensions according to the specifications. The Brass reducing companion flanges can be used in piping systems that work with water lines. The flanges are designed based on the inlet and outlet sizes needed. The thickness of the flange is decided based on the pressure requirement. Reducing copper flange and other specific material flanges are made for specific applications.

Advantages of reducing flange

Weld neck reducing flange requires less space than the combination of a weld neck flang and a reducer fitting. At tight corners and crowded spaces of the piping system, the reducer flanges are better options to reduce the space required. Socket weld reducing flange can provide a space for a pipe to be fitted in like it can be fitted into a socket fitting, but demanding less space.

How can Threaded reducing flange be classified based on face finish?

Threaded reducing flanges has threaded ends to be connected with the threaded ends of the pipes. While threaded ends are useful to install, the flanges have other finishes for various conditions. The stock flange finish is the most common. The spiral serrated finish has a spiral serration to hold the gasket in place. The concentric serrated finish is another type of serration. The smooth finish has a 63-125 AA finish. The cold water finish is done on flanges which can be installed without the need for a gasket.
