What is the difference between SAE 4320 hex bar hardening and tempering conditions?
SAE 4320 Alloy Steel Cold Drawn Round Bars are hardened and tempered steels to provide components with the mechanical qualities necessary for their intended service. SAE 4320 Hex Bar is heated to the proper hardening temperature, typically between 800-900°C, maintained at that temperature, and then “quenched” (rapidly cooled), frequently in oil or water. This is followed by tempering, which develops the final mechanical qualities and releases stresses during a soak at a lower temperature.
