What is Stainless Steel 304 Pipe?

A 304 pipe is an austenitic grade of stainless steel. Stainless Steel 304 pipe has a chemical composition of 18% chromium and 8% nickel with other constituting alloys. The SS 304 pipe has good corrosion resistance properties and can efficiently transport fluids and gases.

The 1.4301 stainless steel pipe has good deep drawing quality and works well in high pressure and temperatures. These pipe also have enhanced toughness in cryogenic temperatures. A SUS 304 pipe is easy to clean and fabricate, giving them an excellent appearance. They have enhanced machinability and can only be hardened using a solution treatment process.

Difference between AISI 304 seamless, erw and welded pipe manufacturing process

Piping materials of the 304 grade are generally produced in seamless, welded, and erw manufacturing processes.

  • The 304 stainless steel seamless pipe is manufactured as hot steel billets pierce through an extruded metal. Here the billets shape the metal in definite dimensions. The absence of seam in the 304 seamless tubing gives its enhanced strength and tolerance compared to welded or erw counterparts.
  • A Stainless Steel 304 erw pipe is manufactured by cold forming of steel material in a cylindrical shape. A low frequency AC current is passed through the SS 304 erw pipe. Here the longitudinal seam pipe melt at high temperatures. They don’t require a filler metal to weld them in place.
  • The SS 304 welded pipe is manufactured as a strip, sheets and plates are cold rolled using a bending machine. The Welded 304 stainless steel tubing is then welded in place with or without filler material.
