Stainless Steel 321 Pipe Fittings

 Stainless Steel 321 Pipe Fittings

What are stainless steel 321 pipe fittings?

An alloy with austenitic microstructure, they have good weldability because they are stabilised with titanium. The chemical composition of 321 fittings is similar to grade 304.

The corrosion resistance of ASTM a403 wp321 elbow

Corrosion resistance properties for the elbow are at par with grade 304. Though, the ASTM A403 WP321 Elbow is resistant to potable water where chloride content is about 200 mg/L at room temperatures. But an increase in temperature leads to a reduction in its corrosion resistance properties.

SS 321 tee heat treatment

To increase the corrosion resistance properties of the alloy, solution annealing is carried out between 950°C -1120°C, followed by rapid cooling. To stabilize the material, it is given a heat treatment of 870°C – 900°C for 1 hour per 25mm of thickness, and it is then cooled by air. Stabilizing is carried out on the SS 321 Tee for severe service applications. The fitting undergoes stress relieving at 700°C, for 1 to 2 hours, and is cooled by air.

What is the welding procedure of the UNS s32109 reducer?

The material has excellent weldability and can be welded using all conventional fusing techniques. Usually, austenitic stainless steel alloys need to undergo pre and post-welding operations to successfully evade corrosion and prevent cracking. The stabilizing element in the alloy is titanium, which proves to be beneficial while welding. However, Stainless Steel 321 Pipe Fittings are more likely to lose titanium during welding, making it a prerequisite to preserving the element. A common practice to achieve a high-quality weld in the system is to ensure the use of good inert gas. One must also pay special attention during welding to prevent the pick up of nitrogen from the atmosphere and carbon from oils. Since the UNS S32109 reducer has an austenite microstructure, the fitting is highly susceptible to cracking while welding. But because the alloy gets resolidifies with a small amount of ferrite, its risk of cracking becomes smaller.

The advantages of using 321 stainless steel pipe fittings

There are two advantages of using grade 321 Stainless Steel Pipe Fittings –

  • They have good resistance to intergranular corrosion
  • The fittings can be used in elevated temperatures ranging between 800°F to 1850°F.
