Heavy duty stainless steel springs applications and uses

Commonly used in construction, motorsport, and railway industries, heavy-duty Stainless Steel Springs are designed keeping in mind the high levels of force and tension they need to withstand.

How are ss springs coated?

Springs are coated similarly to fasteners. For eg., if they are to be galvanized; the spring will be immersed in a vat of molten zinc. The liquid zinc will coat the spring following which it will be dried to ensure the sealing of the base stainless steel alloy.

What is the difference between SS extension spring and stainless steel compression spring?

SS Extension springs are constructed such that they contract or extend in opposite directions on the application of force. On the other hand, a stainless steel compression spring generates a unidirectional force upon application. Ideally, the latter is built to support a weight ( car suspensions, camshafts, and car seats) whereas the former (garage doors, drawers, windows) is intended to hold something in place.

Why is stainless steel used for springs?

Stainless steel is highly ductile and has good malleable properties. Furthermore, they have high strength and excellent resistance to highly corrosive substances. They are tough and have high creep strength at extreme temperatures, making them useful in high-pressure environments.

How do you keep boat trailer leaf springs from rusting?

Since these springs are exposed to oxygen and moisture from the environment, it is wise to use a suitable grade like 316. The chemical composition prevents the alloy from getting oxidized. However, if grade 304 is used, finishes are an excellent choice as protection. Popular finishes include galvanization, oil painting, cadmium finish, black oil, etc. Cleaning and lubricating the spring also prolongs its life.
